Rachael Winter

I started working at Salon Nochea when I was 16 years old. My mom was a client of the salon.  JoAnn was cutting my mom’s hair when the receptionist came over to tell her the shampoo girl just quit. My mom quickly chimes in and said “my daughter needs a job.” I started the next day. I didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school. I definitely didn’t want to go to college. JoAnn told me if I go to cosmetology school, she would give me a chair the day I graduate. So, I finished high school early and went straight to beauty school. As promised, the day I had my license in hand, JoAnn put me on the books. There wasn’t an open chair so I had a makeshift station in the shampoo area with a shelf, a chair and a hook for my blow dryer. During my initiation period, I performed pretty much any service the salon offered, except massage. I did a couple manicures in a pinch, waxing of all kinds, facials, airbrush tanning, every crazy client request for hair and last-minute walk-ins. Being the new girl, JoAnn always told me I was a reflection of my own paycheck, so I basically never said NO! LOL! A stylist eventually left on maternity leave and didn’t return and I got “my own” station next to Lauren for 15 years. Last year, I volunteered to move upstairs into the newly renovated hair area. I think I am the only salon employee who can say they have worked on all 3 floors.

I’ve come a long way since then. Now I just stick to doing hair! Many, many clients. Many proms and weddings. Many corrective colors. Many nights, Saturday’s and holidays. I’ve been with my clients through their weddings, kids and some divorces. I’m married now with my own 2 kids. Been under construction for ever in my own house- my clients have been with me through all of that! I’m still have some clients that have been with me since my makeshift station I’m the shampoo room. My passion shines through up dos. I love having creativity in styling the hair in a way a client can’t do themselves. Nothing gives me greater joy when a client says to do what will work for their hair and look the best! Prom day and wedding days have always been my favorite. My prom girls book a year in advance, no joke!
